The Sounds of Breathing

Based on “The Sound Of Silence” written by Paul Simon

Hello respiratory friends
We’ve come to talk to you again
About when you are ascultating
About the noises you are hearing
So that we can as a department exclaim
We’re the same
Naming the sounds of breathing

The first thing we’ll discus is rales
Often heard when a heart fails
They are quite like the sound you hear
When someone crinkles hair next to your ear
They are caused when fluid gathers in the alveolus
So that gives us
One of the sounds of breathing

Now we’ll attempt to simplify
The sound you may know as rhonchi
It is a continuous sound
Exhalation is when it’s most found
Its low pitch tells of mucous in the airway
One more essay
About the sounds of breathing

Then we have what’s called a wheeze
Identified with great ease
A high pitched sound that is caused by
Constricted airways low and high
Hopefully you won’t catch it too late
To dilate
Out this sound of breathing

Now the last one we have bub
Is a pleural friction rub
It’s described as a harsh grating
Sound when you are ascultating
Often found when a patient is suffering
From what’s known as pleurisy
Now you have the key
To identify sounds of breathing
